Standing Stones

The landscape of Ireland is scattered with enormous standing stones called megaliths – sculpted and erected over 6000 years ago.

Nobody knows exactly what the stones were used for, perhaps to mark a boundary, a burial place or a battle. Whatever their purpose it must have been
extraordinarily difficult to excavate and transport them to their place in the landscape. We do know that they remain some of the most impressive and mysterious objects in the Irish countryside.

Ed Coveney, inspired by the haunting beauty of
standing stones, creates modern sculptures carved from indigenous Irish stone that link through the millennia to the people who once lived on this island.

Ed hand selects these monumental stones, which can
stand five metres tall and weigh up to eight tons.
Each stone has been naturally formed over thousands of years by weather, ice and the movement of the earth.

An Ed Coveney sculpture is far more than a focal point in a garden. Each piece has a monumental power and presence that conveys the almost mystical link between the natural environment and man’s creative impulse.
